At Heslington Dental Practice we provide a range of treatments and as a result we can confidently manage your dental condition.
Both our Dentists and Hygienists can discuss these options with you, as they range from simple advice, through to professional cleans.
We can also advise if you may benefit from surgical treatment to manage your gum condition.
1. Introduction
Before any tools come out, your hygienist will start with a friendly chat. They’ll ask about your medical history, any new medications, and if you’ve noticed any sensitivity or “problem spots”.
Pro Tip: Be honest! If you haven’t been flossing or using interdental brushes, let them know. Admitting it just helps them tailor the cleaning to your needs.
2. The Assessment
Next, they’ll perform a thorough examination of your teeth and gums. This often includes:
- A Periodontal Check: They use a tiny probe to measure the “pockets” between your teeth and gums. Healthy gums usually measure 1–3mm.
- Oral Cancer Screening: They’ll check your tongue, cheeks, and throat for anything out of the ordinary.
- Plaque Map: They’re scouting where the “fuzzy” stuff (plaque) and the “hard” stuff (tartar) are hiding.
3. The Power Wash (Scaling)
This is the main event. Your hygienist uses specialized tools—either hand scalers or an ultrasonic scaler—to remove plaque and tartar (calculus).
Think of it as a tiny power-washer. The ultrasonic tool uses vibrations and water to blast away hardened deposits that your toothbrush at home simply can’t budge. It might feel a bit tingly, but it’s doing the heavy lifting to prevent gum disease.
4. The Buff & Shine (Polishing)
Once the “crunchy” bits are gone, it’s time for the polish. They’ll use a rotating brush and a slightly gritty paste (often in fun flavors!) to buff away surface stains from coffee, tea, or red wine.
Many modern clinics now also offer Airflow Therapy. This uses a pressurized jet of water, air, and fine powder to clean deep into the nooks and crannies, leaving your teeth feeling incredibly smooth.
Finally, you’ll get some personalized coaching. This isn’t a lecture! They’ll show you the best techniques for your specific mouth—whether that’s a better way to angle your electric toothbrush or recommending a specific interdental brush for those tricky gaps.
The Result? 🦷
You’ll leave with that “squeaky clean” feeling that only a professional can provide. Plus, your breath will be fresher, your smile will be brighter, and you’ll have the peace of mind that your oral health is on track.
See you in six months! 🗓️
