Got Your Lord Deramore’s School Place? Here’s Everything Else to Sort Before September
This week, families across Heslington and the surrounding area have been receiving their primary school place offers for September 2026 and for many, that means the exciting news that their child has secured a place at Lord Deramore’s Primary School in Heslington village.
It’s a brilliant school to get into. Rated Outstanding in every single category by Ofsted in June 2024, Lord Deramore’s has served the Heslington community for over 200 years and has a well-deserved reputation as one of the finest primary schools in York. If your child has a place — congratulations.
But with the excitement of a school place confirmed, there’s also a practical checklist starting to form. Uniform. School bags. Settling-in visits. And two health registrations that are easy to overlook but genuinely important: a GP and a dentist.
Register with a Local Dentist — Before You Need One
Children’s dental health matters more than most parents realise, and the habits formed in those early primary school years set the pattern for life. The NHS recommends children visit a dentist as soon as their first teeth appear — and certainly by the time they start school.
The problem is that finding a dentist in York who is accepting new patients — especially NHS patients — is increasingly difficult. Many practices have closed their books, and waiting lists are long. The time to register is now, before September, not when your child has a toothache on a Wednesday morning.
We’re Right on Your Doorstep
Here’s the good news. Heslington Dental Practice is located at 11/12 Main Street, Heslington — just a few minutes’ walk from Lord Deramore’s School on School Lane. We are currently welcoming new patients of all ages, including children, and we have appointment availability to get your family registered and seen well before the new school year begins.
We’re a family-run private practice built on 15 years of experience at our sister practice in Scarborough. Our team understands that children can feel nervous about the dentist, and we take a calm, patient and reassuring approach with every young patient who comes through our door. The goal is always to make the first few visits as positive as possible — building confidence and good habits that will last a lifetime.
What Does a Child’s Dental Check-Up Involve?
A new patient check-up for a child at Heslington Dental Practice is straightforward, friendly and nothing to worry about. We’ll take a look at your child’s teeth and gums, check that everything is developing as it should, and give you practical advice on diet, brushing technique and anything else that will help keep their smile healthy as they grow.
If X-rays are needed they’ll be kept to a minimum and explained clearly. If we spot anything that needs attention we’ll discuss all the options with you in plain language — no jargon, no pressure.
Our new child check-up costs just 0.99p with a paying adult and we can register the whole family at once, making life much simpler for busy parents.
The Back-to-School Checklist – Tick the Important Ones
While you’re sorting everything out before September, here are the two health registrations worth doing straight away:
- Register with a local GP — if you’ve recently moved to the Heslington, Fulford or Osbaldwick area, make sure your child is registered with a York GP surgery so you have access to NHS healthcare locally
- Register with a local dentist — book online at Heslington Dental Practice or call us on 01904 904 500. We’re accepting new patients now and can get the whole family registered before the school term starts
Spread the Word
If you know other Lord Deramore’s families who are new to the Heslington area — whether they’ve just moved to York, are joining from Fulford, Osbaldwick or Badger Hill, or are relocating for the University — please do share this with them. Getting registered with a local dentist early is one of those small things that makes a big difference when it matters.
We look forward to welcoming you and your family to Heslington Dental Practice. Congratulations again on the school place — here’s to a wonderful September ahead.
